Often perceived as rivals, Malaysian and Indonesian batik hold different histories and aesthetics while it is celebrated in the region. For the first time ever, we bring two batik makers from Indonesia and Malaysia to share the same stage as they discuss everything about batik from their country – batik techniques, challenges of keeping the batik ecosystem alive, design inspiration and the future of batik in their countries and beyond.

About the Panelists:

Bayu Aria Widhi Kristanto is an Adjunct Professor of Batik and Fashion in Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta as well as the owner of Hotwax Studios based in Yogyakarta and Pekalongan. Since 2007, Hotwax Studios have produced exclusive fine hand-drawn batik which celebrates new artistic forms and technical innovation.

Maryam Samirah Shamsuddin is the founder of Cotton & Sago, an impact-driven enterprise focused on uplifting forgotten batik makers and preserving the heritage. Her journey with the batik artisans of Terengganu began when she was approached to create a C-suite corporate gifts carrying Malaysian heritage. Since then, they have supplied batik for clients, made collectively by the batik artisans in Terengganu, including a luxury brand for their Net-a-Porter NET SUSTAIN range.

About the Moderator:

Hafiz Rashid is a museum docent at the Malay Heritage Centre and a textile enthusiast with a particular interest in the textile traditions of the Malay Archipelago. He is fascinated by the hidden stories behind batik motifs and spends most of his free time reading up about them.
