Jauh Dikenang, Dekat Disayang

You are always in our hearts even when we are miles apart.

Jauh Dikenang, Dekat Disayang celebrates batik in the region in the month of August – a special month where Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia celebrate their independence. What’s a better way to celebrate this than to share our love for batik!

Despite the uncertainties we live in now, we know one thing is certain – that while the pandemic has impacted us and made the distance between our neighbours and us seem further than it actually is, our shared love and appreciation for batik bring us all closer in our hearts. We want this celebration to be one that soothes the yearning to travel and visit our neighbours. We also want to assure ourselves that we will pull through this together as we continue to lend support to our batik craftsmen and batik advocates across the region and beyond. There were live sessions at Galeri Tokokita, online discussions, and live batik demos in-store.

If you missed it, it is not too late to continue the conversation! For a limited time in October 2021 only, catch up on all the virtual sessions!

This event is organised by Galeri Tokokita and aNERDgallery and supported by Makanpedia SG. We believe in advocating the beauty of batik through sharing about the ecosystem of batik and its makers in Indonesia and the region. This enables batik wearers to make an informed decision in their purchases of batik.

Pakai Baju Batik: An Observation of Batik Fashion

Singapore was once a trading centre for batik in the region where one could find batiks from both Malaysia and Indonesia. Although these batiks initially came in the form of sarongs, people experimented with batik to form new garments such as shirts and pants. This rich tradition of wearing batik still continues in the present day with new designers coming up with novel designs and forms. Watch Lee Chor Lin (author of Batik: Creating and Identity, Singapore) and Hafiz Rashid (Docent, Malay Heritage Centre, Singapore) and moderated by Oniatta Effendi (Galeri Tokokita, Singapore) as we take a close look at batik and contemporary fashion, alongside find connection to and new meaning with this traditional cloth.
