Description

About the Panelists:

Afif Syakur is the fourth generation of a batik makers’ family from Pekalongan. His love for batik was nurtured since he was young. In 1990, he finally fulfilled his dream by setting up his brand Apip’s Batik Craft (which is now known as Apip’s Batik). He is actively involved in various batik and craft associations across Indonesia with a goal to forward the development of batik and to preserve its cultural heritage. He is a key leader in obtaining a Geographical Indication for Batik Tulis Nitik Yogyakarta in 2019.

Daniel Tendean has been living in Singapore for more than 15 years and has been working within the financial industry ever since. He now calls Singapore home. Being true to his roots, he has a great passion for batiks and other Indonesian textiles in general. His love affair with batiks started early. Growing up in Jakarta among Javanese neighbors gave Daniel his first taste of Javanese culture. His fascination with batik motifs and their rich symbolic meanings developed into deep personal interest. Daniel also loves traveling and building his textile collection while he travels.

John Ang received his MA in Asian Art History at the University of Michigan. After two years in Tokyo as an art journalist, he moved to Taipei and established a gallery that specialised in antique Chinese furniture and textiles. During the 28 years as director of his company, John wrote many articles on Asian Art and a book on Chinese furniture. John’s passion for collecting and researching Malay textiles which started in 2014, culminated in his move to KL in 2018. In 2019, John organized an exhibition in Malay kelingkan embroidery held at the Terengganu State Museum. Currently, John is working on a major exhibition for July 2022, entitled “Splendors of Malay World Textiles”.
