BungaWari
Machine-stitched polyester thread on cotton
104cm x 65cm
SGD 428
This work reflects the modern textile production. Most cotton are mixed with polyester to lower the production cost and selling price, but they are still labelled as “cotton”.
BungaWari, other than being a reference to cotton flowers, in Sundanese culture, it refers to the dwelling of gods and goddesses, relating to the importance of the plant in the past. Now, plastic has taken over the textile world. Cotton fields are replaced with factories, cotton fibres are replaced with polyesters made in the laboratories, and machines take over the weavers. Does it mean that the gods and goddesses now dwell in plastic haven too?
